Each of us have had our lives changed by circumstances beyond our control. In our world, there are many for which devastation comes in the form of natural disasters-weather, geological or biological in nature.
HELP International has answered the call to serve those shaken by nature’s disasters both here (Katrina) or abroad (tsunami). We are expanding our vision to include sending humanitarian aid to disaster regions as a part of the mission we serve.
- In 2002, more disasters were reported than any year of the preceding decade.
- 608 million people were affected-three times the annual avg. from 1992-2001.
- Disasters continue to target the world's poorest and least developed.
- Weather-related disasters continued to rise during the past decade.

"Natural disasters are happening more often, and having an ever more dramatic impact on the world in terms of both their human and economic costs. While the number of lives lost has declined in the past 20 years - 800,000 people died from natural disasters in the 1990s, compared with 2 million in the 1970s - the number of people affected has risen. Over the past decade, the total affected by natural disasters has tripled to 2 billion."

 The First Wave
“Volunteers form the first line of response in the aftermath of any disaster,” Ramanathan Balakrishnan, of UN Volunteers, an agency that mobilizes international volunteers to support sustainable development, told IRIN in Kenya.”
“The first 24 hours after a disaster strikes are the most critical, as it is still possible to save lives, especially in the case of earthquakes.”
